Ultherapy has been in the spotlight recently after Christie Brinkley revealed that this tissue-tightening modality is one of only two treatments she relies on to maintain a youthful appearance. At age 63, Christie is an image of vitality to which many women (and men!) strive. Here, we want to discuss how Ultherapy is helping patients manage the signs of aging without surgery, and what you might expect from this treatment.
Historically, the approach to facial aging has involved surgical techniques that manually lift and drape superficial tissue in a higher position on the face. To date, there has been no other procedure developed that can rival the results of a surgical lift. However, there are benefits to a non-surgical approach, too. Ultherapy is an ultrasound-based device that activates fibroblast cells to produce more collagen. It’s a simple mechanism that is completely natural and, therefore, rejuvenates the face in a way that looks totally authentic.
How Ultherapy Works
During an Ultherapy session, which takes 60 to 90 minutes for full-face treatment, energy is deposited to varying depths of tissue. As ultrasound waves are pulsed against the skin, the transfer of this energy into heat within lower tissues may be felt as intense warming. It is important to note that Ultherapy has an unnecessary reputation as a painful treatment. We are conscientious about patient comfort, and apply topical numbing medication before we begin treatment. Additionally, we provide pain medication to assist with patient comfort. If you have questions about what Ultherapy treatment feels like, we invite you to contact our office for more information. We are happy to speak with you about how we can make your appointment as pleasant as possible.
After Ultherapy
After Ultherapy treatment, the skin may appear slightly red for a few hours. Sometimes, redness lingers and, in some patients, minor swelling is also noticed. There are typically no significant side effects after Ultherapy, which is precisely why this skin-tightening treatment is so popular. Aside from mild flushing, there may be no dramatic changes noticed in the skin. Improvement occurs gradually as collagen strands tighten and rebuild with an influx of new circulation and proteins in the dermis. After 3 to 6 months, skin looks tighter and younger.
