Double Chin Reduction Treatment in San Antonio and South Texas
Dr. Vivian Bucay has been chosen by Kythera (the company that makes Kybella) to be a Faculty Regional Trainer. This means that Dr. Bucay will be responsible for training other dermatologists, doctors and injectors on the safety and appropriate use of Kybella to optimize patient outcomes.
Why Choose Dr. Bucay
Dr. Bucay is recognized as an expert injector for Kybella, and is the first physician in the San Antonio and South Texas area to offer the double chin reduction treatment.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is an injectable made from deoxycholic acid, which is naturally produced by the liver to break down soluble fats in the intestines. After years of research and study, it was found that injecting the acid into the submental area also worked to permanently break down the fat. Since this study has been approved, Kybella has been a prescription medicine for adults to improve the appearance and profile of the chin. It is for moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), or a “double chin.”
Who Is a Good Candidate for Kybella Double Chin Treatment?
Patients with consolidated fat deposits and fullness underneath the chin (“double chin”) are great candidates for having Kybella. However, patients who have a lot of loose and hanging skin (“turkey neck”) are not good candidates for this procedure. Unfortunately, this procedure does not work to remove skin. Additionally, if you suffer from bleeding problems or have difficulty swallowing, you may not be a good candidate.
If you are not a candidate, you may be a good candidate for neck liposuction with or without a neck lift. Dr. Bucay takes her time with every patient from the beginning to end. She will thoroughly review your medical history to see if this procedure is right for you.
Is Kybella a Surgical Procedure?
Absolutely NOT. One of the beautiful things pertaining to Kybella is that it is not a surgical procedure. Rather, it is an injectable similar to Botox injections or dermal fillers.
Is Kybella Safe?
Two large studies prove the safety and effectiveness of Kybella. The studies enrolled over 1,000 adult participants with moderate or severe submental fat. The participants who received injections (for up to six treatments) instead of a placebo (non-Kybella) more frequently saw reductions in fat and improved jawline/neckline contour.

How Many Injections Are Needed?
The amount of Kybella injections for double chin reduction differs from patient to patient. Most patients end up receiving multiple injections (like Botox or fillers) in a single treatment. This generally requires 3-4 treatment sessions about one month apart to see optimal results.
Double Chin Treatment Results
Your results will depend on the amount of excess fat you have under your chin. Most patients begin seeing results 3-4 weeks post-injection. Results are completely different than those of Botox and Fillers. It’s a permanent fat dissolving solution to a heavy neck/jawline. Unlike botox or dermal fillers, Kybella is permanent.
Is Kybella Only For Double Chins?
Yes. The United States FDA gave its full approval for Kybella several weeks prior to its anticipated announcement date. The approved studies have been performed only for the sub-mental region, better known as double chin.
Kybella Recovery Process
Kybella non-surgical double chin reduction requires little-to-no downtime or recovery. Some individuals experience slight discomfort for a brief period of time after the injection. This is similar to other injections and resolves relatively quickly.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Kybella can cause serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw. This can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness, and trouble swallowing. The most common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness in the treatment area. These side effects are also the most seen with Botox injections or dermal fillers.
How Much Does Kybella Cost?
Pricing for Kybella depends on your anatomic concerns and how many injections you may need. Dr. Bucay will gladly go over pricing options available during your consultation and will come up with a price that makes sense to you.
