When you look in the mirror, does the face looking back at you look just a little bit different than it did several years ago? Many patients, in their mid-thirties or forties, begin to notice that their complexion starts to relax and loses elasticity, causing them to look older. This lack of elasticity can be noticed along the jawline, across the eyebrows, or in the eyelids. It used to be that the only way to address this change was to undergo a facelift. However, now patients have a non-surgical, non-invasive alternative with Ultherapy which firms, tightens, and lifts skin from the inside.
What Is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses ultrasound technology to firm and tone skin on your face and neck. These are the same muscles of the face and upper neck that are moved in a surgical facelift or brow lift without the need for surgery. The ultrasound energy is delivered directly to deep layers of the skin by a certified dermatologist where it stimulates the creation of new collagen. Patients can receive great results without incisions, anesthesia, or recovery time.
Stimulating Collagen Naturally
Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound energy t0 jumpstart the body’s natural process of producing new collagen known as neocollagenesis. Ultherapy is not a filler and does not involve any toxins. This procedure utilizes your body’s own collagen-building process to achieve the most natural-looking results.

Dr. Bucay moves the transducer over the treatment area, laying down parallel lines of ultrasound waves. The process is quite precise and safe – she is able to see below the surface of the skin to the targeted area with three-dimensional, digital imagery, and accurately gauge depth. The first pass goes into layers of structural support deep under the skin to firm and tighten. Dr. Bucay treats the area a second time at lesser depth to stimulate natural production of collagen, thus thickening skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Patient comfort is maximized with numbing gel and a combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen, or other measures as needed.

Are Ultherapy Treatments Safe?
The treatment has been tested in clinical studies and more than 100,000 treatments have been performed worldwide. Additionally, the treatment uses ultrasound energy, which has been a part of the medical field for more than 50 years.
Does Ultherapy Hurt?
You will feel tiny amounts of energy that is being deposited to precise depths, which means that the collagen-building process has been initiated. This sensation lasts while energy is being delivered through the ultrasound.
How Long Does An Ultherapy Session Take?
The length of one treatment depends on the area treated and your treatment plan. A face a neck treatment usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes. A chest treatment usually takes about 30 minutes.
How Many Ultherapy Treatments Are Needed?
Usually, only one initial session is needed, but Dr. Bucay will determine that at your initial consultation. Most patients only need one treatment, however, the number of treatments differs from patient to patient based on the person’s degree of skin laxity. Because skin ages, touch up treatments are recommended in the future.
Dr. Bucay will also talk with you about whether Ultherapy™ should be combined with laser resurfacing or other skin rejuvenation treatments to deal with age spots and surface irregularities. Dr. Bucay takes a customized approach for each of her patients, and will make sure that certain treatments are right for you.
Can Ultherapy Replace a Facelift?
There are still instances where a surgical facelift is in order. However, Ultherapy is a wonderful alternative for the patient who wants a firmer, more youthful face and neck without surgery. Ultherapy delivers more resilient skin in a discreet process that won’t have friends wondering if you’ve had work done.
When Will I See Results After My Ultherapy Treatment?
After your Ultherapy treatment, you may see some initial effects immediately, but most of the lifting and tightening of skin takes place within two to three months as new collagen forms. Results will continue to improve for up to six months and last for approximately a year. However, as the new collagen builds, it also ages. Therefore, many patients schedule touch up appointments to keep up with their personal aging process.
Since Ultherapy does not impact the surface of the skin, there is zero downtime. Following your thirty to sixty minute session, you may immediately return to normal activities.
Side Effects Of Ultherapy
The skin may appear red at first, but this will disappear within a few hours. Some patients may experience temporary swelling or tenderness to the touch. Other less common side effects include temporary bruising or numbness in small areas of the skin. With any medical procedure, there is always the possibility for other rare effects, which Dr. Bucay will go over with you.
