What is Botox?
Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a protein produced naturally from bacterial action. Researchers discovered in 1949 that this chemical blocks neuromuscular transmission – signals from the nerve endings to the muscles telling them to contract.
The formulation is laboratory standardized, and has been used for medical purposes such as strabismus (lazy or wandering eye) and blepharospasm (rapid blinking) since the 1980’s and more recently for muscle spasms, migraines, and excessive sweating.
Quick facts about Botox
- Botox is NOT a surgical procedure
- It is NOT a filler (a substance that is injected into certain areas of the face to “fill in” wrinkles)
- Botox is NOT permanent
Benefits of Botox Injections
In 2002, this neuromodulator, under the brand name Botox, was approved by the FDA for cosmetic treatment of glabellar frown lines – those “elevens” between your eyebrows. In addition to Botox, cosmetic dermatologists now have similar formulations, Dysport and Xeomin, available.
Although considered off-label use, today this is an extremely popular choice for softening forehead lines, crow’s feet, and vertical neck bands. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that 2,437,165 procedures were performed in 2010 alone!
Why choose Dermatologist Dr. Vivian Bucay
However, this is real medicine and a serious procedure – after all, it’s your face and health at stake. Dr. Vivian Bucay earned her medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine and trained in dermatology at the University of Miami and Baylor College of Medicine.
She is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and has been in practice since 1991. Every injectable session at her practice is performed by the Doctor or under her direct supervision. The practice is a Botox national training center. Dr. Bucay also serves a faculty on several national continuing medical education initiatives- she is a doctor who trains other doctors.
With a wealth of experience, Dr. Bucay knows which products to use for certain areas to get the best results. She may also recommend and integrated approach – neuromodulators first to relax facial muscles, then dermal fillers (keep in mind that Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin do not add volume) to erase etched frown lines. Treatment with neuromodulators several weeks prior to fractional resurfacing enhances results by reducing movement so new collagen isn’t readily broken down.
What to expect with Botox
BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin injectables do a terrific job of refreshing your face in two ways. First, by blocking impulses from nerve endings that cause you to draw up facial muscles, neuromodulators allow your face to look relaxed.
Second, results last up to a year, allowing your muscles to retrain naturally to a more composed, attractive appearance, further reducing wrinkles. As Dr. Bucay likes to say, “the line you don’t make is the line you don’t get.” Neuromodulators are also a wonderful compliment to other rejuvenation treatments, such as dermal fillers.
Can men receive Botox treatment?
Yes! BOTOX Cosmetic has been clinically evaluated in male patients. In clinical studies for moderate to severe frown lines, 17.5% of patients treated with BOTOX Cosmetic were men. In the clinical studies for moderate to severe crow’s feet, male patients comprised approximately 12% of patients treated with BOTOX.
Dr. Bucay will discuss your treatment goals and perform a complete facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatments for you. The actual injection process takes about 10 minutes.
Botox side effects
Possible side effects include: dry mouth; discomfort or pain at the injection site; tiredness; headache; neck pain; eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight and dry eyes; and allergic reactions.
When will I notice results after Botox?
You may begin to notice results in as little as 24 to 48 hours for moderate to severe frown lines. Results may last up to four months!
Will my results look natural?
Laws differ by state, but unfortunately, many Botox injections are not performed by a dermatologist, a medically trained doctor with several additional years of schooling and clinical experience. In many cases, injections are administered by unqualified and unsupervised individuals – sometimes in a party environment at a patient’s home or a hair salon. Neuromodulators may be used for beauty and rejuvenation, but make no mistake about it, these are potent drugs with the potential for serious side effects and complications if not handled by an expert.
Dr. Bucay has been performing Botox injections since 1996, and this something she does every single day at the office, not just on certain days.
