No, EMFACE is a non-invasive procedure and is very gentle on the skin. You will feel your muscles contract and feel a comfortable heat across your face. You should not feel intense burning or any pain during the procedure.
What Are The Risks of EMFACE?
EMFACE is a safe procedure, but there are a few risks you should be aware of before undergoing treatment.
These risks include the following:
- Skin irritation - The electromagnetic energy used for EMFACE treatment can potentially cause your skin to be irritated, redness, and swelling. This is more common for people who have sensitive skin.
- Burns - If the treatment is not performed properly or the device is on a high intensity, the electromagnetic energy can burn a patient’s skin.
- Changes in your skin’s pigmentation - It is possible to experience a change in your skin’s pigmentation after your EMFACE treatment. Your skin may darken, which is known as hyperpigmentation, or lighten, which is known as hypopigmentation.
- Muscle soreness - Since EMFACE is a cosmetic procedure that affects the facial muscles, it is common to experience temporary muscle soreness or stiffness after the procedure. If these symptoms persist or worsen, contact Dr. Bucay immediately.

What Are The Contraindications of EMFACE?
As with any type of cosmetic procedure, patients must first be considered to be a good candidate for EMFACE. While the procedure is safe, there are contraindications that can disqualify patients from EMFACE treatment.
These contraindications include the following:
- You have facial piercings
- You have facial tattoos
- You have implants in your cheeks or forehead
- You have a pacemaker or defibrillator
- You are currently pregnant
- You are breastfeeding
- You have had a recent sunburn
- You have open wounds on your face
- You have an active infection
- You have severe acne
- You have unrealistic expectations regarding the procedure
You will know if you are a good candidate for EMFACE during your consultation with Dr. Bucay or another member of her team. They will assess your medical history, your aesthetic goals, and any medical conditions you have. If you are not considered to be an eligible candidate for EMFACE, they can recommend safer alternatives.
Is There Any Downtime Associated With EMFACE?
EMFACE is one of those treatments that is considered to be a “lunchtime” procedure. This is because EMFACE does not require patients to have downtime following the procedure. Immediately after the procedure, you may experience mild redness and swelling, but these typically fade away after a little while. This allows you to resume your normal activities safely.
