How Stress Impacts Your Skin and What You Can Do About It

Stress is something we all face, but did you know it can show up on your skin? Whether you’re dealing with unexpected breakouts, fine lines that seem to appear overnight, or persistent dark circles, stress can take a visible toll on your complexion.

Dr. Vivian Bucay and her dermatology team specialize in treating stress-related skin concerns with cosmetic solutions. Visit Bucay Center for Dermatology & Aesthetics in San Antonio at our La Casita and Sonterra/Stone Oak locations.

How Stress Affects Your Skin

When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol, a hormone that can increase oil production in your skin. This can cause clogged pores and breakouts, even if your skin is typically clear.

Chronic stress also accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin, two proteins responsible for keeping your skin firm. As a result, you may notice more pronounced fine lines or wrinkles.

Stress doesn’t stop there. It can also disrupt your sleep and give you dark circles and puffiness under your eyes. Chronic stress can also cause inflammation and potentially worsen existing conditions like eczemarosacea, or psoriasis.

What You Can Do About It

Stress might be a part of life, but it doesn’t have to take a toll on your skin. Simple lifestyle changes paired with dermatological care can help your skin bounce back. Here’s how to get started:

1. Manage Stress Levels

Reducing stress isn’t just good for your mind – it’s great for your skin. Activities like yoga, meditation, or even a daily walk can lower cortisol levels and calm inflammation. If your schedule is packed, try carving out just a few minutes each day for deep breathing or mindfulness exercises.

2. Focus on Nutrition and Hydration

Healthy skin starts from within. A nutrient-rich diet packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats can boost your skin’s repair process and fight inflammation caused by stress. Think leafy greens, berries, and nuts. Staying hydrated is just as important – water will help keep your skin radiant.

3. Invest in Expert Care

When stress leaves visible marks, professional care can make all the difference. Bucay Center for Dermatology & Aesthetics provides treatments like facialschemical peels, and customized product plans to tackle stress-related skin concerns head-on. A little help from our experts can restore your skin’s glow.
