Do You Have Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is common, but that does not make it harmless. Ongoing itching, scaling, or cracking skin can interfere with your comfort and may signal a fungal infection that needs medical attention.

Dr. Vivian Bucay brings decades of dermatology experience to Bucay Center for Dermatology & Aesthetics in San Antonio, Texas. She works alongside board-certified dermatologists Dr. Rachna Bhandari and Dr. Talia Noorily to provide thorough diagnosis and effective treatment for stubborn skin concerns. Patients in La Casita and Sonterra/Stone Oak trust their combined expertise for comprehensive medical dermatology care.

What Exactly Is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that usually begins between the toes, but it can also affect the soles, heels, or sides of your feet. The fungus grows easily in warm, damp environments like sweaty socks, tight shoes, gym locker rooms, and pool areas.

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent itching, especially between the toes
  • Burning or stinging skin
  • Redness or inflammation
  • Peeling or flaky skin
  • Cracking skin that may feel sore or tender
  • White, soggy-looking skin between the toes
  • A scaly rash along the bottom or sides of the foot
  • Small blisters that may ooze or crust

Despite the name, athlete’s foot can affect anyone, even if you have never stepped into a gym locker room. These symptoms can range from mild to uncomfortable, and they often do not resolve on their own.

If over-the-counter creams have not helped, or the rash keeps returning, it is worth having a dermatologist take a closer look. Other skin conditions can mimic athlete’s foot, so an accurate diagnosis matters.

Get Clear Answers About Your Skin

Left untreated, athlete’s foot can spread to your toenails, hands, or other areas of the body. It can also cause painful cracks in the skin, increasing your risk of bacterial infection.

Prescription antifungal medications, whether topical or oral, may be needed for more persistent cases. We can determine the right option based on the severity and location of the infection and make sure you have a clear plan to fully resolve it.
