Glycolic Peels Explained

We blame a lot of the signs of skin damage on aging, but there are many reasons we see brown spots, lines, and wrinkles as we get older. The skin is exposed to harmful UV light every time we go outside. It responds to a lack of nutrients, dehydration, and environmental toxins, as well. The appearance of the skin is important to our confidence and sense of well-being. Understanding this, our team performs treatments that address specific concerns as well as the general problems that develop over time. One of the most convenient ways to address dermatologic concerns is with periodic glycolic peels. We explain this treatment here.

What is a Glycolic Peel?

A glycolic peel is a skin-enhancing treatment that affects change using certain chemical ingredients. Chemical peels have been common for many years and act as a form of professional exfoliation that removes the layer of debris that covers the epidermis. During treatment, a solution containing glycolic acid is applied to the skin, where it remains for only a few minutes. Though the acid is removed quickly, it stimulates the sloughing-off of dead and damaged cells and regeneration of healthy new cells. Because glycolic peels can be customized to varying strengths, this treatment is suitable for all skin types.

Glycolic peels are appropriate for many people and a variety of concerns, including:

  • Mild to moderate sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Acne blemishes
  • Rough texture
  • Poor skin tone

Chemical peels are comfortably received in one of our San Antonio offices. Treatments typically take less than an hour and do not incur much downtime, if any. Some people refer to these light to medium peels as lunchtime procedures because side effects are minimal. Redness may occur but can usually be covered with makeup, which can be applied right after the peel. What patients need to be aware of is the photosensitivity that may occur after a glycolic peel. This can last up to 24 hours, so sunscreen is a must. Also, a chemical peel can make the skin more absorptive, so makeup and other products may cause irritation or blemishes.

Daily washing, moisturizing, and sunscreen are not enough to fully manage aging skin. For additional help from a chemical peel or other professional services, contact one of our San Antonio offices to schedule a skin analysis with Dr. Bucay.
