What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins occur when a section of your veins becomes dilated. This emphasizes the appearance of the veins and causes them to be seen through the skin.

Spider veins appear in several different colors, depending upon the individual. Sometimes the veins will appear red, while other times they will take a blueish or purple color.

What Causes Spider Veins?

The specific cause of spider veins is damaged veins. Veins can be damaged by standing or sitting too long, wearing tight clothing, pregnancy, taking birth control pills for prolong periods of time, and excessive weight.

Who Can Get Spider Veins?

Spider veins can happen to anyone, but there are some individuals who are more likely to develop them than others. Women are more susceptible to spider veins than men.

Age also plays a factor with spider veins. Spider veins are most commonly found in people who are over the age of 50, but they can start to appear at any age.

What Treatment Options are Available for Spider Veins?

The most common treatment option for spider veins is laser treatment. Using a high powered laser, this treatment works to thin out the veins. Thinning the veins out causes them to fade.

Laser treatment is the most recommended course of treatment because it is extremely successful in reducing the appearance of spider veins. However, it is not the only treatment option available. Sclerotherapy and surgery can also be used to treat spider veins, but these are typically reserved for severe cases.
